What rain?

I have really been enjoying the rain. Aside from my white-knuckled drive to work Monday morning, it has been nice. Vanessa and I have ventured outside a couple of times to run errands or get something to eat, but we spent most of the weekend inside watching The Grudge and The Terminal. I didn’t enjoy The Terminal that much. Aside from Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones, it was disappointing. The Grudge was great and kept me on my toes throughout the entire movie. I had to plan when to drink from my cup so I wouldn’t freak out and drop the glass.

My dad called me last night. He worked extremely hard on a project at work last month and as a reward they offered him (and the others that worked on the project) a choice of 4 different 2-night vacations. He told me he isn’t going to use it and is offering it to Vanessa and I to use. He does things like this a lot and I always feel guilty. I mean, he is the one that worked countless hours and weekends to get the project completed and now I get the reward. I didn’t do anything to deserve the vacation. Anyway, I am extremely grateful. Vanessa and I have already thought of a nice way to thank him, but since I know he will be reading this, I’m not going to reveal that now.

I would like your opinion on which place you think we should go, or if you have been to any of these places before:

Santa Barbara – El Capitan Canyon: www.elcapitancanyon.com
La Jolla – Estancia La Jolla Hotel and Spa: www.estancialajolla.com
Palm Springs – Le Parker Meridian Hotel: http://www.lemeridien.com/usa/palm_springs/leisure_us1817.shtml
Las Vegas – Best 4-Star Hotel available

Also, we are planning on taking my mom to the Body Worlds 2 exhibit this weekend (near USC). If anyone has restaurant recommendations for lunch and dinner, I would appreciate it.

  • You should check out the

Watergrill in Downtown LA (about 5 min North from USC)

    or also

The Empress Pavillion in Chinatown (about 10 min north of USC)

but it all depends what you're craving.

  • I'd go with La Jolla or El Capitan,
    but that's just me.
If you do go to El Cap, you definitely have to see the movie
    "Sideways". Great wineries are
    close by.

  • I'd go to Vegas. There are a lot distractions there. It sounds like you would have to be involved in a lot of convereasions and romance if you go to any of those other places. Stick with the bright lights and half naked women that Vegas offers.

  • I'd do La Jolla, you can stop by the San Juan Capistrano Mission and then do the outlets, and then Sea World!

  • Cheap Mexican: La Barca, on Vermont just below the 10. You get a lot of food and it's pretty good. It's also 2 blocks from the USC campus.

Excellent somewhat expensive American food - Pete's Cafe in downtown L.A. (on 4th Street I believe).

Excellent sushi - Sushi Gen in Little Tokyo, or Hamakawa if you don't mind not having an atmosphere.

Also, if you're thinking about Vegas, find out what hotels actually have 4-stars. I think a lot of places are rated higher than they should be. I agree with the previous poster - frack the romance. Valentine's Day already passed. But if you don't want total Vegas, try staying at the Palms - it's pretty nice and away from the Strip. Or, try Green Valley Ranch, which is like staying in a casino in an upscale mall in the suburbs. But be advised that the table limits at GVR are not good for low-rollers like myself ($10-15 minimums at all times).

  • Thanks for all of the tips. I'll check out the restaurants on the Internet. As for the trip... I think I'll stay away from Vegas. I can go there anytime. I'll give it some more thought this weekend and let you know.
