Justin Casey Peas

Growing up with the name “Page” was not easy and was borderline traumatic. I think it’s a great name for a girl, but not great for a boy. Other than the misspellings (“Paige” is the female spelling) and many people assuming I must be a female before meeting me, it is just an odd name. Many kids made fun of my name in school, and looking back it wasn’t that bad, but it sure seemed like it at the time. “Paging Page”, “turn the page”, “Chapter”, “Book”, “Paper”, Poser Page”, “What page number are you”, are all the things said that come to mind.

Other crappy things that have happened: One year in summer school I was daydreaming when I heard the teacher call my name. I responded and everyone started laughing. The teacher was telling us our assignment was on Page 27. When Vanessa went to change her name on her Social Security card the clerk refused to do it at first because she thought Vanessa had married a girl on the Marriage License.

Growing up with an odd name has made me a little jaded when it comes to the thought of naming my own children. If I had to deal with it, so should they! The list of names I have come up with are one’s that would make my name seem quite normal in comparison. First, I have decided all of my children’s middle names will be Alowishious. This is from an inside joke from my high school years which I will not divulge here.

Boys Names
Crustaceous Alowishous Montgomery (“Crusty” for short)
Albondigas Alowishous Montgomery (You know… like the soup) (Just call me Al)

Girl Names
Gertrude Alowishous Montgomery ("Gertie" for short)

Any other ideas?

I have learned to like my name. It is unique, so people tend to remember who I am. I really don’t think about it that often anymore.

As for the title “Justin Casey Peas”, my sister knew Andy Peas in high school. He always said this is what he would name his son.

Ironic? No, sometimes things just suck.

I have begun planning the nity grity details for our trip to Europe. At first glance December 24th through January 9th seemed like a great time to go. The airfare is cheap, there aren’t a lot of people over there, etc. As we get closer, I am starting to wonder. We are landing in London on Christmas Day. Well, all of the subways are closed Christmas Day. I found a train that runs from the airport to a station about ½ a mile from the hotel, so I think we are just going to have to walk.

December 26th is Boxing Day, so a lot of the attractions are closed. I was able to do some research on the internet to find enough things that will be open that day, so we can stay busy.

The next dilemma I am dealing with is Sunday, January 2nd, when we are in Germany. I was planning on having us take a train to Koblenz (a little town on the Rhine river), and hopping on a 6 hour cruise down the river while looking at castles. Well, the cruise runs every day except Christmas, New Years Day, and January 2nd. Why? I don’t know. So, I decided to rent a car. The car rental place is closed on Sundays in Neuss (the town I’m in on January 1st) and in Koblenz. No luck. I think I can take a train to Cologne, then switch to another train that goes to the airport, then rent a car.

It makes me wonder how difficult it was before widespread use of the Internet.

I can deal with all of this as long as I have my cast off before I leave. I am not walking around in the snow with a cast!!!

Gobble Gobble

This was a very busy weekend. Wednesday, I went to the podiatrist to have another x-ray and get my 3rd cast put on. While he was cutting off my cast I asked him why they don’t just soak the cast in water and then cut it off (the cast is applied by soaking the fiberglass rolls in water then applying them like an ace bandage). He told me if that happened then only the cotton layer closest to the skin would get wet and the fiberglass would stay hard (foreshadowing).

He seemed pleased with my x-ray and said he could see little striations of bone starting to grow. I think I saw them, but it may have just been wishful thinking. He spent the 30 minutes while wrapping my cast explaining to me the proper way to cook a turkey… again. He told me the same thing last time I was in there. I just kind of nodded my head and toned him out. So I have anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks minimum before I am done with having a cast.

Within 10 minutes of being home, I stepped in a puddle and soaked the bottom of my cast. Just like the doctor said, the cotton was soaked and the cast was hard. I panicked a little, because he told me there was no way to get the water out and that if I ever got the cast wet I would need to come in the next day to get a new cast. Well, I knew they were closed until Monday, so I was screwed. I set up a portable heater and blasted it on the bottom of the cast. It took about 24 hours, but the inside finally dried.

Thursday and Friday morning, Vanessa and I spent cleaning the house, shopping, and getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner. We had our parents over on Friday. Everything came out perfect. For appetizers we had olives, pickles (sweet and dill), and French bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We pulled out all of the nice china and silver I was given when my grandmother passed away. For dinner we had wheat and white rolls, green beans with bacon, stuffing with spicy sausage in it, turkey (more on that later), cranberry jelly, and Malicious. Malicious is a dish my mom makes. It is yams, with walnuts, brown sugar and other stuff mixed in. She then melts marshmallows on top. SO GOOD! For dessert, Vanessa made pumpkin Crème Brule and homemade vanilla bean ice cream with real vanilla beans. We didn’t even get to the pies my dad brought.

The turkey came out good. I made it on the BBQ. We used butter, parsley, garlic, and orange rind mixed together, which was pushed under the skin and all over the top. Inside the cavity were two oranges and onions (just for flavor).

Saturday, I went to Home Depot to get a couple of nuts and bolts to fix the garage. A brace snapped a couple of weeks ago. So, I fixed the one that was broken, and broke another one trying to tighten it. This gives me something to do next weekend.

Sunday, we ran some errands in the morning. My dad came over to watch the 49er vs. Dolphins game. We lost. We really do deserve to be in last place (which we are). I spent the rest of the day eating leftovers (yummy) and helping Vanessa organize sound effects for her play coming up. This week and next week are going to be hell for her, so I am going to try and be supportive. I’ll let you know how that goes.

Life’s guidelines

Kelly made a comment about a month ago on an entry I wrote about being pessimistic:.

“Its like the sand box theory. If you saw two sand boxes and both had kids in them. Would you go to the sand box where the kid is having fun or the sand box where the kid is just sitting there? Its like life.”

It has really stuck with me and I have been making an effort whenever I remember. This ranks right up there with a couple of my other favorite theories in life I have always remembered.

My Dad: If it can be replaced with money, then it’s not worth being upset about.

This means if the problem could be solved by spending money, then who cares? Just worry about the stuff that can’t be replaced by money (friends, relationships, respect, missing limbs, etc.).

My Mom: Life is full of people who want you to jump through hoops.

Sometimes you have to do things that aren’t logical just to get ahead in life. She explained with an analogy. You are a tiger in a circus. The guy with the whip wants you to jump though a ring of fire. Why do it? You do it because you want food and you don’t want to get whipped. To the tiger there is no reason to jump through the hoop, other than for the reward. Life is like this sometimes. You have to do stupid things that don’t make sense, so you can get what you want. Play the game.

There is one more that I am a little embarrassed about. I was watching Bob Dole on a PSA to get prostate exams. At the end he says, “Everything worthwhile takes courage”. Now I am not a fan of Bob Dole, but it was a great saying. I have used that advise countless times. Anytime I was hesitant to do something I have remembered this saying.

I try and remember each of these sayings as I go through life.

"What was Page doing this weekend" you ask?

Since I didn’t post anything on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, I have decided to make up for it today (more posts below). Friday I spent 7 hours in a meeting at work. I can’t complain too much, since it was my meeting. Overall it went well. Everyone seemed impressed and I am expecting my project to be approved in a couple of weeks. The pricing will be discussed tomorrow. Friday night

Saturday, Vanessa and I slept in a little then went to lunch. There is a Cheesecake Factory in Brea that just opened last weekend, so we were planning on eating there. Unfortunately, there was a 30 to 40 minute wait, so we went to BJ’s across the street. No wait and great food. Afterward, we went to Eddie Bauer to exchange some stuff (yes, again), got some ice cream at Cold Stone, and I got a haircut. I always feel better after I get a haircut. We spent the afternoon cleaning the house. Between my broken foot and Vanessa’s work schedule the place hadn’t been cleaned in weeks. It took us a couple of hours and we got the bulk of it done.

Saturday night we drove to Garden Grove to meet some of the teachers from Vanessa’s school at a Sushi restaurant. Only a couple of people ordered sushi and they only ordered a California rolls (doesn’t count). We got our regular assortment of rolls (Spicy Tuna, Rainbow, Crunchy, Spider, etc.). Everyone else got Teriyaki Chicken or Shrimp Tempura. It was a great restaurant, but still not as good as the place down the street from us.

Sunday, I woke up early with the intention of getting a lot done before my dad came over at 10:00 am. I didn’t get anything done. Vanessa went to Henry’s Market and bought bagels and muffins for breakfast while my dad and I watched the 49ers get annihilated by Tampa Bay. Sad. Really sad. Vanessa and I spent the rest of the day watching TV and writing “thank you” letters. Yes… for wedding gifts received 3 months ago. They are almost done now.

Halloween at work

I was able to find some pictures from the Halloween Costume Contest at work. I posted a couple of them below so you can get the idea.

Thanksgiving

I would have to say that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I adopted Groundhog’s Day (before the movie came out) as my favorite, because it is often overlooked, but I actually enjoy Thanksgiving the most (as long as Donald isn’t included). I'm especially happy, because I get Thursday and Friday off this year. At every other company I worked for I would have to work on Friday. This will be nice.

This year Vanessa and I are hosting Thanksgiving at our condo. It will be our first time. Since everyone was so generous for our wedding, we have a fully stocked (and extremely small) kitchen and can make just about anything. I am planning on cooking the turkey on the BBQ this year. I’ve had it this way before and I think it turns out the best. I know deep-fried is the fad right now, but I don’t think it’s that amazing.

I can’t wait! Turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberries, sweet pickles, olives, wine, and a surprise dessert! Yummy!

Happy Birthday Dad!

Don't worry, I won't tell anyone how old you are! Anyway, I hope you have a happy birthday. We should do something this weekend - Friday night or Saturday. Maybe go to dinner? See a show?

The roles we play

Last night I was talking to my mom on the phone and the topic of my Uncle Richard and his new wife came up. She is from Thailand and plays a very traditional role in their marriage. He works and makes the money and she does everything else. She cooks, cleans, serves him, etc. This really upsets my mom and she said she wants to get a hold of his new wife and “westernize” her.

My uncle married a Thai woman mostly for the reason that she is not “westernized”. Today’s American woman often tries to have the best of both worlds. They want to be “equal” when it suits them, and “treated like a lady” at the same time. I feel that the marriages that tend to work are those in which each person plays some of the traditional roles. For the most part, men are still expected to lift anything heavy, take out the trash, take care of the cars (purchasing and maintenance), protect the family, plan for the financial future of the family, and deal with anything that can be purchased at Home Depot. While there are always exceptions, men accept this role and take on the tasks without much of a thought.

Women, it seems, have become less willing to continue with their historic roles of taking care of the house (cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc.) and men are now expected to share these duties in addition to their own. I think women often forget the roles men play, because it is not something that stands out everyday.

This also came up in the conversation with my mom last night when she mentioned that even though I have a broken foot, I should still help Vanessa with all of the chores around the house. Vanessa has been very busy with work and school, so I already have been trying to help, but my foot swells quickly if I am on it too much.

This opinion sounds extremely sexist. I know. I am not saying one sex is better than another. Men and women excel in different things because they are different. We have different hormones that affect us in different ways. This website does a good job of explaining this same viewpoint from a woman's perspective.

R.I.P. – O.D.B and the 49ers

Friday night, Vanessa and I went out to dinner with our friends Ed and Tiffany. We met at the Cedar Creek Inn in Brea. Really nice restaurant. I was going to bring my laptop to show them pictures, but decided it might be a little tacky to spend a nice dinner looking at a laptop. When we arrived there was Ed with a new laptop/tablet to show us their pictures. I guess it wasn’t tacky after all. They had just returned for the worst wedding ever. The bride was upset because Ed’s mom (the bride’s new mother in-law) refused to serve the guests Frito Lay chips from a variety pack. The bride reeked of body odor for the rehearsal dinner and the wedding. To top it off Ed’s mom bought dinner for 200 guests (the number the bride gave her) and only 65 people showed up. Ouch!

I was stuffed by the time we left. Looking back it makes sense. I had Calamari, Stuffed Portobello’s, Chateaubriand, and a Brownie Sundae for dessert. I was uncomfortably full for the rest of the night.

Saturday Vanessa and I ran some errands. We sorted out her passport issue (change of name), went to IHOP for breakfast (where I spotted a one-armed midget), stopped at to REI for some stuff for our Europe trip, went to Eddie Bauer to return some stuff and buy new clothes, went to William Sonoma to finish buying the rest of the items from the wedding registry, stopped at Henry’s Market for lunch, and got the oil changed on the Honda. We finished everything before 4 pm. My foot was swollen by then, so we relaxed for the rest of the day and watched movies.

Sunday I went to San Francisco with my dad. It was windy in Ontario, so the take-off was a little dicey. The 49ers kicked some ass the first half of the game, but played terribly the second half and ended-up losing the game. The 49ers are now tied with Miami for the worst record in the NFL. Sad.

Oh yeah... O.D.B. died. I will remember him every time my cell phone rings (Baby I got your money).

My favorite lyrics from ODB:
"god made dirt and dirt bust yo ass"
"If you wana look good and not be bummy, girl you better give me that money"

Foot update…

I know everyone is anxious to hear about my foot! Well too bad, your going to read about it anyway. I had my first cast taken off yesterday, took more x-rays, and had a new cast put on. The first cast was taken off using an electric saw. Even though I knew it wouldn’t cut through my skin I was still nervous. It did catch my ankle at one point and I jumped, but it didn’t do any damage.

My foot was no longer tender where it broke (good news), but the x-rays showed the bones are still not touching. He seemed more positive this time about not having to do surgery, but did mention I will probably need to wear another cast after this one. I have another appointment on November 23rd to have another cast put on. The insurance company approved the Bone Growth Stimulator (insert hilarious sexual comment here), so that should help. The doctor gave me a copy of my x-ray, so if I remember, I will scan it into my computer and post it here.

My new cast if black (black is very slimming you know) so hopefully it won’t stand out as much. This one is much tighter and it not nearly as comfortable or flexible as my last one. I drank a Black Russian (Kahlua and Vodka) and had a hot chocolate with Kahlua (highly recommended) last night to take my mind off of how uncomfortable it is. It worked. As long as I don’t need surgery it’s worth it.

This weekend I am going back to San Francisco to watch the “Battle for Last Place in the NFC” as the 49ers (1-7) take on the Carolina Panthers (1-7).

More holidays… please!

Thanks to all of the Veterans I was able to make it to work quickly this morning. This has distracted me now. Rather than thinking about all of the Veterans and what they have given to this country, all I can think about is how we can create more National Holidays. The last holiday I remember being implemented was Martin Luther King Day (started in 1986). This pleased me to no end, because I was born on the same day as MLK. This meant I would always get a day off on or around my birthday.

My workplace does not give us the day off for Veteran’s Day, so I’m not looking for more holidays so I can get the day off. I just want everyone else to have the day off so I can have a smooth ride into work and a quick drive home.

I was hoping, and I still think it might happen, that September 11th will become a holiday. The term Patriots Day has been thrown around as a name for this day. The argument came up stating what if something like September 11th happens again. My answer – create another holiday!

Other National Holiday ideas
1. Groundhog’s Day (February 2nd)
2. Fat Tuesday (46 days before Easter, Tuesday between February 3rd and 9th)
3. Valentine’s Day (February 14th)
4. St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th)
5. April Fool’s Day (April 1st)
6. Flag Day (June 14th)
7. Constitution Day (September 17th)
8. Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19th)
9. Leif Erikson Day (October 9th)
10. Halloween (October 31st)
11. Election Day (Tuesday on or after November 2nd)
12. Pearl Harbor Day (December 7th)
13. Boston Tea Party Day (December 16th)

I think the goal should be to have 20 National Holidays a year. These should be spread out, so there is at least one each month. Any other ideas?

I need your help

Vanessa and I are going on our trip to Europe in December. While we are there I will be stopping in Neuss to visit my friend Sebastian and his family. I lived with them for 6 months when I was 16. They did so much for me and I have always wanted to show them my gratitude. It is customary when you visit someone's home from another country to bring a gift. So I have been racking my brain for months to think of a present to bring Sebastian (now 31 years old) and another present to bring his parents. I would like for it to be something that is unique to California or the United States.

I am willing to spend a good amount of money for this, but I have only come-up with a couple of ideas.

For Sebastian (I would get all of these plus more, not just one)
  • License Plates - He wanted a California license plate when he was here previously, but was not able to get one. I can get him one or I can buy all 50 states for $230.00
  • In-N-Out Gear - Maybe a couple of T-Shirts and stuff like that.

For his Parents
  • Picture from Rodney Lough - These are really nice pictures taken from around California. Here's the one I would get. They are amazing and look increadible when seen in person. The picture would be 16" x 20" or 20" x 24" and it would be matted and framed.

When his parents visited my parents they brought a nice Cookoo clock from Southern Germany. It was a nice present my parents could display and remember where it came from. I would like to do something similar. Does anyone have ideas of a gift I could give to either Sebastian or his parents that would be something special from California?

Fun in Santa Ana?

Saturday night Vanessa and I went to Santa Ana to hang out with some friends. Mark has a loft in Santa Ana, so we met everyone there for drinks before heading out to a restaurant. My only experience of Santa Ana before this was a really bad one in which I called the police and contemplated filing assault and attempted battery charges, but that’s another story. I was pleasantly surprised to experience the “softer side” of Santa Ana.

Mark’s loft was impeccable. It was definitely a guys place, but looked like a picture from the Pottery Barn. Clean lines, muted tones with an occasional splash of color, all in a large open space. After some introductions and a stiff drink, everyone was buzzed and ready to dinner. We walked two blocks to a little restaurant named Gypsy Den. After dinner we walked around the numerous art galleries to add some culture into our suburban lives and enlighten our souls. I liked some of the paintings, but most of the stuff was priced outrageously ($5000.00), so we mostly looked. Vanessa and I did buy one piece, but it was affordable at $39.00

It was nice to get out and see something new. I really like little downtown areas like this and I am pleased to see a tend in many cities to renovate their downtown areas to make them friendly. It provides a feeling of community that many cities lack. It almost makes me want to move out of Yorba Linda, but since YL is redoing their Old Town area, I’ll just wait for that.

Sunday I went to the 49er game with my dad to watch them lose. Still had a good time, but it’s more fun when they win. I still think we have a chance against Carolina next week (1-7) and Miami later this month (1-8). What part of STEAK Fajita Burrito do you not understand?

My lungs filled with hot Magna... yes Magna

It was late at night. Brian Sipp and I were riding our bikes down by the Alpha Beta in Diamond Bar. As we rode by one of the automatic doors, Brian stopped, reached inside, and grabbed a pack of cigarettes - Magna Reds to be exact. It was done very quickly and no one saw him except for me. I hung out with Brian because he was a good influence on me. I know this sounds strange, but I was such a good kid and so dorky, that I needed someone like Brian to loosen me up. Despite stealing the cigarettes, he wasn’t a bad kid.

We rode our bikes about a couple of blocks to my old elementary school and parked our bikes behind one of the portables. He packed the cigarettes, unwrapped the pack, and offered me the first one. I took it. My mother had pounded the “don’t smoke” speech into my head for so many years. Almost all of my relatives had died from lung cancer. So why was I taking it? Brian flicked the lighter and held it up for me. I inhaled and my lungs filled with smoke. I was 15. Did I like it? Yes and no. I hated the taste, smell, and feel of the smoke. I liked it because I was doing something wrong. I liked it because I was doing this at my old elementary school where I was such a good kid. I liked it because it made me more acceptable to Brian’s other friends that smoked and I wanted to hang out with. We smoked a couple more at the school that night before heading home. I remember going straight upstairs to take a shower. I couldn’t let my parents smell the smoke on me.

Brian let me keep the pack, which was dumb because I knew I wouldn’t smoke by myself. It took only a couple of days for my mom to find the cigarettes hidden so deftly under my pillow. I apologized profusely, told them I did it out of curiosity, and broke all of the cigarettes in half. I was smoking again later that week. I continued to smoke casually until I went to Germany where I increased my habit to a pack or two a day. At that time Germany was consuming 11% of the worlds tobaco. Not bad for a country the size of California.

I finally quit on February 22, 1993. I was at a birthday party for one of my friends, smoked several packs, and only got 2 hours of sleep before getting up to go somewhere with my dad. I felt like crap and even though I knew it probably wasn’t the cigarettes, I blamed them anyway. My parents never knew I smoked until I told them last year.

Movie watching goal update

Since I posted my goal on September 7th, I have watched 15 movies which are on the lists. The goal was to watch the top 100 movies from the “International Box Office” and “Highest Rated”

International Box Office
September 7th – 12 remaining
November 1st – 7 remaining

Highest Rated
September 7th – 56 remaining
November 1st – 46 remaining

I know that I will not complete this by the end of the year, but I will still continue to work on it. A couple of the movies have not been released to DVD or television yet, so I will have to wait. In case you are curious (and I know you are) here are the remaining movies from the International Box Office:

Passion of the Christ
The Day After Tomorrow
Troy
Tarzan
Gone with the Wind
Ice Age
Godzilla

The movies I have watched recently:

Some Like it Hot
Sunset Boulevard

Different Points of View

I stayed up until midnight watching the election returns come in. I knew the Presidential race would not be decided, but there were other state and local results I was anxious to see. Aside from how it appears the President will be, I am pleased with the results.

Being a Kerry fan and living in Orange County has been an educational experience for me. Although Kerry won in California, 55% to Bush’s 44%, Orange County supported Bush with 60% of the votes. Vanessa and I spent the first debate at a sushi restaurant. They had it on all of the TV’s. A family was sitting at the bar next to us and the dad asked his daughter whom she would be voting for. She replied with some hesitation that she wasn’t sure. The father starting arguing that if she loves America and has good Christian values, then there isn’t any other choice than George W. Bush. It turns out we were surrounded by Bush supporters.

Whenever Bush would speak they would stop and listen. Then as Kerry would begin speaking, they would start talking amongst themselves. After not listening they would comment that Kerry didn’t have a point and he was flip-flopping on the issues. It was interesting to step back and observe.

When I went to have my cast put on, my doctor spent 20 minutes explaining to me that John Kerry was a coward, and that he purposefully got injured in Vietnam so he could come back home. He went into great detail about how Kerry was never in danger when he pulled the soldier out of the river and that there was another boat right behind them that would have rescued the soldier if Kerry didn’t. He continued by telling me that Kerry had never initiated anything while in the Senate (not true).

The most interesting thing he said was that it must be all of the uneducated people who are voting for Kerry. That statement struck me, since I was thinking similar thoughts about Bush supporters. I have always categorized Bush supporters into three categories: devout Republicans who refuse to cross party lines, religious fanatics, and people too full of fear to switch Presidents during a war. Perhaps it really is the policies that they agree with and that I don’t.

Halloween 2004

I'll add more pictures tomorrow, but I posted one of Ali G and Madonna above. They won the "Best Couple" costume. Vanessa and I went as a newlywed couple. She wore a mock wedding dress and I wore a suit. We were all bloody and bruised up to prove to all of the non-believers how blissful marriage really is. Just to add a little more to it she carried around my balls in a glass jar and she had a “special bruise” in the middle of her forehead.

The party at Ryan’s was fun, but it was evident that our average age is now 30. No one was out of control or completely obnoxious. Then again we left around 1:30 am, so something may have happened after we left. Overall, I was impressed with the number of people who dressed up and how creative they were. It was strange seeing so many of the people who read my blog and most of the people whose blogs I read at one place. In some ways I felt like there wasn’t much to talk about since we know what going on with each other, but it also gave us something to talk about. It was particularly nice to see Michael Jung from www.rightonbro.com . We have met multiple times before, but until now we have never had much to talk about.

The next day my foot was hurting and swollen from standing on it so much at the party, so I spent 90% of my day on the couch, with my foot up, watching all of my favorite football teams lose. I felt a little bad sitting on the couch while Vanessa did dishes, went to the store, and did homework while I watched TV. I can’t believe I have to wear this for another 3 ½ weeks!!!
Tune in tomorrow for more Halloween pictures and an update on my movie watching quest (I bet you can’t wait!!!).
